THE
PEOPLE'S MILLENNIUM FORESTS : FACTS
Project
Overview:
Over fifteen hundred acres of native Irish woodland have been
designated as 16 'People's Millennium Forests' and are dedicated
in perpetuity to the people of Ireland. The forests include newly
planted areas using native Irish seed and the restoration of native
woodlands that have been in existence for at least 200 years and
probably longer. A native tree has been planted on behalf of every
household in Ireland and a certificate posted to all homes giving
details about the household's tree and where it is planted. The
forests form a lasting legacy for all to enjoy and will include
woodland walks, nature trails, interpretative and recreational
facilities. Other aspects of the project included a mobile exhibition,
a schools programme, a video
on native woodlands, a book about the project, local events (including
forest walks and seed collections) and a native woodland training
programme for farmers and woodland owners.
Virtually
all of the forests are located on old native broadleaf woodland
sites and six are within designated National Heritage Areas (NHA's).
The sites will be managed sensitively using best ecological management
practices.
This
project shows that this generation cares about our natural heritage.
Future generations will look back to the year 2000 as the year
when a positive statement was acted upon, signifying the development
and rehabilitation of our native woodlands for the benefit of
us all.
