THE
PEOPLE'S MILLENNIUM FORESTS : TREES
Alder,
Fearnóg:
Found
in damp areas, such as along river banks and lake shores, the
alder is a relatively rapid growing tree. In early spring it develops
attractive reddish catkins, which develop into small cones containing
the seed. Alder produces a very strong wood, which in the past
was used to make round shields, but is used today in the furniture
trade and also in areas where the wood is likely to be submerged,
because alder wood is resistant to decay when submerged in water.
