THE
PEOPLE'S MILLENNIUM FORESTS : SCULPTURE
COMMISSIONS
Groundwork is a voluntary organisation affiliated to the Irish
Wildlife Trust. Its objective is to identify and undertake vital
conservation tasks which would otherwise not be attempted. Long
term projects have been the eradication of the invasive Rhododendron
ponticum from native woodlands in Killarney National Park,
Co. Kerry and Glenveagh National Park, Co. Donegal.
On
the 17th of September 2000 Groundwork celebrated 20 years of woodland
conservation. In honour of the occassion, a specially commissioned
sculpture, funded by the People's Millennium Forests, was unveiled
by Sharon Shannon, one of Ireland's most famous traditional musicians.
The sculpture, Sylvan World, was carved by Martin Monks and is
located in the Arboretum at Muckross, Killarney National Park.
